How to Prepare for a Youth Softball Tryout

A tryout is more than a test of athletic ability. It is an opportunity for a player to show how they prepare, listen, compete, communicate, and respond to coaching.

Know what to bring

Pack the equipment you normally use, water, appropriate athletic clothing, and any information the organization requested. Arriving prepared removes unnecessary stress.

Arrive ready to learn

Coaches may give instructions that are unfamiliar. Listen first, ask a clear question when needed, and then apply the instruction. Coachability is a skill.

Compete without trying to be perfect

Mistakes happen during evaluations. Reset quickly, keep communicating, and make the next play.

Show how you work with others

Encourage teammates, communicate on the field, and treat coaches and other players with respect.

Ask questions afterward

Families should ask about coaching, schedules, costs, travel expectations, roster needs, and communication before making a commitment.
